EAST LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Sheriff's Homicide detectives are investigating a murder-suicide that left twin children, their mother and father dead.

The suspect, 45-year-old Salvador Acevedo, and his girlfriend, 33-year-old Iris Oseguera, engaged in a domestic dispute while in Acevedo's vehicle with their 5-year-old twins and three adolescent children around 9 p.m. Saturday, Deputy Lillian Peck said in a report. Acevedo shot Oseguera and the twins before dropping the adolescent children off at a relative's home, investigators said.

The adolescents reported the incident to an adult, who notified authorities. It's believed the unharmed children are from one of the adult's previous relationships.

Deputies found Acevedo's vehicle near Hicks and Olympic with the shooting victims inside.

Acevedo and Oseguera were pronounced dead at the scene, and the twins, Michelle and Michael, were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Al Qaida 'certain to strike back'

There has been a wide range of reaction from around the world in response to the news that Osama bin Laden has been killed and the impact his death will have.
Experts from the Centre of Defence Studies (CDS) at King's College London said al Qaida will "undoubtedly" recover and strike back in retaliation for his death.
While bin Laden's death will come as a "major blow" for the terrorist organisation, the American "triumph" could lead to serious reprisals, they warned.
John Gearson, reader in terrorism studies and director of the CDS, said: "I think the significance of what has happened cannot really be overstated. I would expect embassies and military bases around the world to be on high alert for some time."
Former British Army colonel Richard Kemp, commander of British forces in Afghanistan in 2003, echoed his fears, suggesting the Taliban could now look to bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al Zawahiri, for leadership. He told the BBC: "I think this is not the end of al Qaida by any means."
Meanwhile, Afghan president Hamid Karzai said the death of the terrorist mastermind in Pakistan proves that the fight against terrorists should be focused on the neighbouring country. He added that he hoped bin Laden's death will mean the end of terrorism, adding that he received his due punishment.
But Pakistan's foreign ministry said the death of bin Laden shows the resolve of his country and the world to fight terrorism.
Also on Monday, former prime minister Tony Blair, whose premiership was in many ways shaped by the September 11 and July 7 atrocities, expressed his "heartfelt gratitude" to Mr Obama and those who carried out the military operation which killed bin Laden.
In a statement released by his office, he said the operation showed that "those who commit acts of terror against the innocent will be brought to justice, however long it takes".

Class Discussion Reflection (Immigration)

Today's discussion was intense. It was a sensitive subject to some people. I was able to tell in their face and voice. There was a lot of very good points made. But for myself and in my opinion 2 students said stuff that i thought was very true and i strongly agree with. for example, one mentioned that we need to stop blaming illegal immigrants on taking American jobs. Like I said in today's discussion, its a dog eat dog world and you gotta do what you gotta do to make a living. Life is all competition and someone is going to come out on top. Yes, it's true, immigrants are getting employed much faster than Americans, but it is also true that they are doing the jobs other people dont want to do. We as Americans need to put ourselves in their shoes. They can't go to college and become a doctor, teacher, lawyer, or anything like that. Americans do. If they study in their country, they can't work over here because they dont have their license to be able to perform a task in their field here, they have to do their whole education and get a license here, and they cant redo their education because they are here illegally. If they were able to do their job here, people would trip out on how life expectancy would go up. We need to look threw the eyes of an immigrant. How many of us dont have a family member here illegally?? well, we are all immigrants. In that case, wouldn't we all get deported?? We hear talk about immigration reform over and over again but nothing is getting done about it. To me, I strongly believe that immigrants should get a chance to be here. See, if they were criminals or doing some kind of criminal activity then that's is a different story. And the truth is, whether people like it or not, we need immigrants!!! and America was founded on immigrants. so none of us wouldn't be here if it wasn't for your ancestor that came here better their lives... they might not of been able to, but if it wasn't for them, you wouldn't be where you are today.

This song just reminded me of this for some reason lol

Hope this reflection made you think about some things.

Officials: KTLA Viewer Assists Arrest in Disabled Bus Passenger Beating

SAN BERNARDINO (KTLA) -- Police have arrested a man suspected in the brutal attack of a disabled man on a San Bernardino bus.

Ronald Jackson, 44, was already in a San Bernardino County jail for a carjacking-related arrest on April 11, one day after the beating, according to police.

Authorities said they received a tip from a KTLA viewer earlier this week identifying Jackson.

Jackson, a resident of San Bernardino, was also on parole for a conviction of assault with a deadly weapon.

The attack happened on April 10, shortly after 5 p.m. near 15th Street and Medical Center Drive and was captured on surveillance video.

In the minutes leading up to the attack, police say the suspect was confrontational with passengers on the bus, and then he attacked an innocent disabled bystander because the man was talking to himself.
The victim, who suffers from autism, was hit and kicked repeatedly before taking off on foot.

San Bernardino District Attorney will file charges against Jackson on Friday.

Camp Pendleton Marines to Get Special "Ballistic Boxers"

The British military has worn similar gear for several years.

Protective underwear worn by British troops.SAN DIEGO -- Marines serving in Afghanistan from Camp Pendleton and other bases will soon receive specially designed underwear to provide protection against the improvised explosive devices that are the Taliban's favorite weapon.

The new underwear, which look like the shorts worn by professional cyclists, will not stop bullets or shrapnel but are designed to prevent dirt and other debris from entering wounds to the genitals and causing infection. Made of sturdy silk, the so-called "ballistic boxers" are treated with antimicrobial agents to prevent such infections.

U.S. troops have suffered an increase in wounds to the genitals and urinary tract due to roadside bombs.

Though troops wear helmets, heavy boots, and protective vests with front-flaps over the genitals, there is little to stop the damage inflicted when a bomb explodes beneath a soldier or Marine on a walking patrol.

"It's almost as if they [the Taliban] have developed these bombs to inflict the maximum damage," said Navy Cmdr. James L'Esperance, a urologist who has treated wounded Marines and soldiers.

A study conducted by doctors at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, the U.S. military hospital where serious casualties are brought from Iraq and Afghanistan, found a significant increase in injuries to the genitals and urinary tract. In 2009, 52 personnel were brought to the hospital with battlefield injuries to their genitals or urinary tract. In 2010, that figure was 142, including 21 who lost a testicle and eight who lost both testicles.

The Marines from the Camp Pendleton-based 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment, suffered 24 dead and more than 175 wounded during a recently completed seven-month deployment to the Sangin district of Helmand province. The battalion was replaced by the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, also from Camp Pendleton.

Marine brass expect the Taliban to mount a counteroffensive in Sangin in an attempt to win back control of "key terrain." Part of that operation is expected to be increased use of roadside bombs.

In a recent six-week stretch, nearly half the attacks with improvised explosive device against U.S. troops in Afghanistan occurred in Helmand province where the Marines are assigned.

While the concept of specially designed protective underwear is new to U.S. troops, the British military has worn similar gear for several years.

Frank McCourt 'In Disbelief' Over Dodgers Takeover

A legal challenge by Frank McCourt could delay an ownership change.

Dodger StadiumLOS ANGELES -- Dodgers owner Frank McCourt expressed disbelief over Wednesday's decision by Major League Baseball to appoint a trustee to oversee the team's day to day operations and investigate the club's finances.

"Major League Baseball sets strict financial guidelines which all 30 teams must follow," McCourt said in a statement Wednesday night. "The Dodgers are in compliance with these guidelines. On this basis, it is hard to understand the Commissioner's action today."

Meanwhile, Jamie McCourt has issued a statement supporting the decision.

"As the 50% owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, I welcome and support the Commissioner's actions to provide the necessary transparency, guidance and direction for the franchise and for Dodgers fans everywhere," Jamie McCourt said in the statement.

Two people with knowledge of the situation say Commissioner Bud Selig was also strongly considering forcing the sale of the team by invoking his "best interests of baseball" powers to wrest the team from Frank McCourt, the owner since 2004, who he believes has mismanaged the franchise while enriching himself, according to the New York Times.

If Selig invokes his extraordinary powers, he would seek to gain the support of three-quarters of the sport's 30 owners, and then sell the Dodgers on McCourt's behalf, the NY Times reports.

According to the NY Times, Selig believes that McCourt has badly damaged the value and reputation of the Dodgers while concerned only with his own profits and perks.

The official statement from Commissioner Bud Selig:

"Pursuant to my authority as Commissioner, I informed Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt today that I will appoint a representative to oversee all aspects of the business and the day-to-day operations of the Club.

I have taken this action because of my deep concerns regarding the finances and operations of the Dodgers and to protect the best interests of the Club, its great fans and all of Major League Baseball.

My office will continue its thorough investigation into the operations and finances of the Dodgers and related entities during the period of Mr. McCourt's ownership.

I will announce the name of my representative in the next several days. The Dodgers have been one of the most prestigious franchises in all of sports, and we owe it to their legion of loyal fans to ensure that this club is being operated properly now and will be guided appropriately in the future."

The announcement comes just days after McCourt reportedly got a $30 miIllion personal loan from Fox Broadcasting Company last week to cover the Dodgers' payroll.

The loan marks the second time since the end of last season that Fox has provided money to the Dodgers owner so he could cover expenses, according to the L.A. Times.

The loan was furnished to McCourt personally rather than to the Dodgers, so the arrangement did not require Selig's approval.

A legal challenge by McCourt as well as the divorce case could slow attempts to transfer the Dodgers to a new owner.

Man's Tattoo Leads to Murder Conviction

A detective's keen observation helped crack the case

Anthony Garcia, 22. (Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deparment)PICO RIVERA (KTLA) -- Authorities say a gang member's oddly specific tattoo on his chest has led to his conviction in a 2004 murder case.

Anthony Garcia, 22, was found guilty Wednesday of first degree murder with gang enhancements for the murder of a Pico Rivera man on January 23, 2004.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials, investigators first connected Garcia to the case when an investigator was looking through photographs of gang member tattoos and came across an image of his chest.

Garcia's image had entered the system after he was arrested for driving on a suspended license by California Highway Patrol officers in 2008.

The tattoo featured an image of Ed's Liquor on the 6600 block of Rosemead Boulevard. In front of the building, a peanut-shaped man is being shot by a helicopter and then laying face down.

Above the tattoo reads "Rivera Kills," referring to Rivera 13, the name of Garcia's gang. The helicopter in the image stands for Garcia's gang name -- "Chopper."
The detective on the case remembered the scene from a crime he had worked on in 2004 in which 23-year-old John Juarez was shot dead in front of the liquor store.

After further investigation, Garcia was booked and arrested in October 2008.

"Sergeant Kevin Lloyd's incredible observation of Garcia's extraordinary tattoo, combined with great investigative work is one of the reasons why sheriff's homicide investigators are known as 'The Bulldogs,' said Sheriff's Captain Mike Parker. "Fate and tenacious police work brought this convicted murderer to justice."

Garcia is scheduled to be sentenced in May.

Toddler Rescued from Running Laundromat Washing Machine

ONTARIO, Calif. (KTLA) -- Authorities say good Samaritans helped rescue a toddler who became trapped inside a running washing machine at an Ontario laundromat.

A teenage family member was apparently playing with the 20-month-old boy and closed the door, causing the door to lock and the machine to turn on, according to Ontario police officials.

It happened around 10 a.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of East Sixth Street.

Witnesses saw the boy tumbling inside the machine and quickly worked to pry open the door and get him out.

One witness said the toddler's face was covered in blood.

The boy was inside the machine for a few seconds, according to Sgt. Robert Freire of the Ontario Police Department.

Freire says if it weren't for the quick actions of the good Samaritans, the incident would've had a "more tragic result."

The toddler was taken to a local hospital in serious but stable condition.

Gang Member Gets Death in Hate Crime Murder of Teen Girl

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- A Latino gang member convicted in the racially-motivated killing of a teenage girl and the murder of one other person in the Harbor-Gateway area was sentenced to death on Friday.

Jonathan Fajardo, 22, was convicted last September of first-degree murder in the December 2006 shooting death of 14-year-old Cheryl Green and the stabbing death of Christopher Ash two weeks later.

Jurors also found that Fajardo intentionally killed Green, who was black, because of her race.

Prosecutors said the shooting was part of an ongoing "turf war" between black and Latino gangs.

They said Fajardo walked to the edge of his gang's territory and fired into a group of black teens.

Additionally, Fajardo was found guilty of the special circumstance of murdering a potential witness in connection with Ash's death.

Prosecutors argued that gang members thought Ash might have been talking to police about Green's murder.

They said Fajardo and other members of the 204th Street gang took turns attacking Ash.

Defense attorneys had argued that Green's murder was a "tragic accident" rather than a hate crime.

They also said that Fajardo was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of Ash's murder.

Fajardo will now be sent to San Quentin's death row.

23-year-old Daniel Aguilar was also convicted of first-degree murder in Ash's slaying. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

24-year-old Jose Covarrubias was also charged in the crime. He testified during the trials of Fajardo and Aguilar, and is expected to get 22 years in prison.

Two other men, 33-year-old Robert Gonzalez and 34-year-old Raul Silva, are still awaiting trial.

23-year-old Ernesto Alcarez is awaiting trial in Green's murder.

Man Gets Jail Time for Ejaculating into Co-worker's Water Bottle

Michael Lallana admitted he ejaculated into a co-worker's water bottle because "her lips had touched it."

SANTA ANA (KTLA) -- A man convicted of ejaculating twice into a co-worker's drinking water has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and three years probation.

Michael Kevin Lallana was convicted Feb. 24 of two misdemeanor counts of battery. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

Lallana worked with the victim, identified only as Tiffany G., at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in Newport Beach.

Lallana "felt that was as close as he could get" to the 29-year-old executive assistant, said Deputy District Attorney Brock Zimmon.

"He did it for the purpose of sexual gratification."The 32-year old from Fullerton admitted that he ejaculated into an "attractive" co-worker's water bottle because "her lips had touched it," but told detectives he never thought she would drink it

He faced a maximum sentence of one year in jail and sex offender registration.

He was charged in February with six misdemeanor counts of releasing an offensive material in a public place and assault, with sentencing allegations for committing a crime for sexual gratification.

Lallana's attorney Eduardo Madrid argued against the charged of misdemeanor assault and battery.

"There was no application of force," Madrid contended.

"It doesn't make any sense. How could there be an assault? (The co-worker) wasn't even there."

The incident happened on January 14, 2010, while both employees were working at the mortgage company, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.

Investigators say Lallana entered the victim's office and deposited his semen into a water bottle that was on his co-worker's desk.

The defendant is accused of leaving the semen-filled water bottle on the victim's desk which she drank when she returned to her office.

The victim, who was unaware of the bottle's contents, drank the contaminated water. She threw it away after feeling sick, investigators say.

Three months later, the victim and six other employees, including the defendant, were transferred to the Northwestern Mutual Mortgage Company's Orange branch. That's where a second incident occurred, according to officials.

On April 9, 2010, Lallana is accused of assaulting the same victim by depositing his ejaculation into another water bottle that the victim left on her desk. The victim took a sip from the bottle, then felt sick. She decided to send the specimen to a private lab to be tested.

The lab contacted her and told her the water bottle contained semen, police said.

The victim then notified the Orange Police Department .

DNA tests confirmed the semen belonged to Lallana.

2 More Sets of Remains ID'd as Human in Hunt for Serial Killer

Since December, eight sets of human remains have been found in Suffolk County, just to the east of Nassau County and roughly five miles from the sites of Monday's discoveries. "It's just been very startling, all of it has been," Smith told reporters Monday. "It's just amazing that we're finding these things. Obviously, we have a lot of work to do." Investigators are trying to determine whether one killer is responsible for all of the bodies being found or whether the area is a burial ground for a serial killer and that other murders have been dumped there as well. The four victims who have been identified thus far all advertised prostitution services on websites such as Craigslist, police have said. The remains of a toddler were also found. It is not clear if the remains are linked to one of the adult victims, or is unrelated. "Collectively, we want to bring to justice this animal who has obviously taken the lives of a number of people," said Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano on Monday. Authorities would not describe what type of remains were found on Monday morning, and Smith did not detail the condition of the skull found in the afternoon. But police have said that the bodies discovered earlier were in various stages of decomposition, including at least one that could have been there for as long as two years, according to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer. The remains have included four female bodies found in December stuffed in bushes along a quarter-mile strip of beachfront property. Last week, three bodies were uncovered within a few miles of each other, fueling speculation that they could be the work of a serial killer. A woman's body was also found March 29 off Ocean Parkway, west of Cedar Beach. The missing woman who prompted authorities to initiate the search -- 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert -- has not yet been identified. K-9 units and dive teams had been added to the search operation in an effort to locate Gilbert, who was last seen alive in May in the Gilgo Beach area. Gilbert's sisters said Shannan was an escort who was visiting a client. They said she ran from the man's house and called 911, claiming that someone was trying to hurt her. Several neighbors also called 911, witnesses say. Police came more than 30 minutes later, but by then Gilbert was gone and has never been heard from again. "You want to believe everything was OK with her," Sherre Gilbert said. "But at the same time, so much time has passed it's impossible to really think that she is still alive." Sherre Gilbert said even if her sister is never found, the search has led to one positive outcome: the discovery of the other women's bodies.

BABYLON, N.Y. -- An aerial search is underway near a New York beach for more evidence in the investigation of a suspected serial killer.

A search by officers on foot was declared over and the aerial search was to be the final sweep of the area.

On Monday, officers found what have been positively identified as human remains in two separate locations near Ocean Parkway in Nassau County, bringing the number of potential victims to 10.

A human skull was found on the outskirts of a bird sanctuary in the town of Oyster Bay.

About four hours earlier, a New York state police officer and his cadaver dog spotted another set of remains about a mile and a half away.

These discoveries come on the first day that authorities probing the deaths of several young women searched for evidence in and around Nassau County.

ELGIN, S.C. -- A Labrador Retriever is being credited with keeping a missing 2-year-old boy safe and warm overnight.

The toddler disappeared on Friday from his South Carolina home.

An all-night search for the toddler turned up nothing.

But the next morning a neighbor reported hearing crying from the woods behind her home.

Searchers investigated and found the boy wearing only a T-shirt and a diaper, clinging to the family dog.

Police say the dog apparently kept watch over the boy throughout the night, as temperatures dropped down into the 40s.

Man Sentenced for Tattooing 3 year old son

ROME, GA -- A young father who tattooed his 3-year old son has been sentenced to probation.

Eugene Ashley was arrested in 2009 after a Georgia Department of Family and Child Services worker reported seeing "DB" tattooed on the child's shoulder.

The 26-year old told authorities that he was drunk and didn't remember tattooing the letters, which he said stood for 'Daddy's Boy.'

Ashley was sentenced to 12 months of probation and a $300 fine after pleading guilty.

The boy's uncle, has custody of the now 5-year-old child.

Toddler Legally Drunk After Restaurant Gives Him Margarita in Sippy Cup

The boy's blood alcohol level was determined to be .10, over the legal limit for adults.

DETROIT, Mich. (KTLA) -- Applebee's is investigating how a 15-month-old boy was served alcohol at one of its Michigan restaurants.

The child got a "sippy cup" as part of a kids meal, and his mother, identified as Taylor Dill-Reese, thought it contained apple juice.

But after a while, he began talking to the walls, and then put his head down on the table, according to Dill-Reese.

She says she tasted the drink, and it was a margarita.

The boy was rushed to a hospital, where his blood alcohol level was determined to be .10, which is over the legal limit for an adult.

Thankfully, the boy is okay.

Police said it was an accident; a mislabeled bottle at the bar was poured into a cup for the child.

Applebee's has apologized, calling the incident "unacceptable."

Applebee's has changed its serving police for children's drinks in the wake of the incident. It will now pour juice from single-serve containers at the table, the Detroit News reports.

The restaurant also plans to retrain workers.

This isn't the first time Applebee's has mistakenly served alcohol to a child.

In 2006, a New York City Applebee's admitted accidentally serving a 5-year-old a Long Island iced tea alcoholic drink instead of apple juice.

Atop new poll, Trump slams China, OPEC and Obama

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Call it the Trump Doctrine. The next time America is called upon to act as global policeman, expect a bill from Uncle Sam.

Property developer, reality TV star and would-be Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he'd apply his business acumen to geopolitics if he wins the White House.

A cultural phenomenon known as "The Donald," Trump is leveraging his reputation as a showy business mogul to set up a possible run for president.

Some of Trump's proposals fall way outside the political mainstream. But his message that America needs radical change draws support from some voters dismayed by diminished economic prospects at home and growing challenges to U.S. power abroad.

On Tuesday, he jointly topped a poll of would-be Republican hopefuls in the nascent 2012 White House race.

For many Americans, Trump is the larger-than-life property mogul who ends each U.S. episode of the TV show "The Apprentice" with the catch phrase "You're fired." On foreign policy issues, Trump is just as blunt.
Under a President Trump, China would be forced to end currency manipulation or face a 25 percent tariff on all exports to the United States. OPEC oil-producing nations would have to drop the price of a barrel or oil to $40-50 or face America's wrath. And Arab nations and South Korea would pay for benefiting from America's military might.

He singled out the recent trade pact with South Korea, signed after a military showdown with communist-ruled North Korea, saying it was a "joke" with insufficient benefits for the United States.

"We go over there, we protect them, we protect them with our ships ... Did anyone pay us for this? No! So, what is happening is mind-boggling."

Trump also took aim at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

"OPEC will cut the price of oil, and if they don't they've got problems," he said. "We are protecting Saudi Arabia free of charge. The Arab League asked us to go into Libya and we go in and we don't say, 'Are you going to pay for it?'"

"I would tell (OPEC) that oil is not going to $150 a barrel

... it's going to be at $40-50 a barrel."

On China, Trump accused Beijing of manipulating its yuan currency, contributing to a U.S. trade deficit that was unacceptable -- it was $18.8 billion in February alone.

"I would put a 25 percent tax on all goods coming in from China to the United States and I would do it without hesitation," Trump said.

THE GREAT FALL OF CHINA?

Economists concerned about the U.S. trade deficit with China say upsetting Beijing could prompt the Chinese to buy less U.S. debt, which in turn would increase U.S. interest rates and make credit here more expensive.

Trump sees it as global test of wills.

"If we stop buying from China, China will go down like no other country has ever gone down before," he said. "China needs us more than we need them."

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released on Tuesday showed Trump and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee led a poll of would-be presidential contenders with 19 percent each -- a doubling of Trump's support since mid-March.

Trump has been on a media blitz for weeks, claiming that U.S. President Barack Obama was not born in America and therefore cannot legally hold the presidency -- an allegation that has been widely dismissed.

"I do find it amazing how the media protects Obama on his birth certificate," Trump offered without prompting.

As to how much he would spend on his campaign, the man who ranks 488th on Forbes magazine's 2010 list of the world's billionaires with an estimated net worth of $2 billion said, "A lot ... whatever is necessary."

He said he would consider running for president as an independent but wants to win the Republican nomination, saying he loves the party. He said he would decide on whether to make a run before June.

Asked if his multiple marriages, bankrupt casinos, roller coaster career and wealth, being a billionaire, a celebrity and regular tabloid fodder would hurt his prospects among ordinary Americans, Trump said times have changed.

"Look, I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't take drugs. I've had two marriages that ended in divorce, that was nobody's fault. I am a very hard worker and it is very hard to be married to a very hard worker, but I think that's what the people of this country need -- a hard worker."

"Ten years ago it would have been a problem but I think today people want someone who is going to protect them and cherish them and take care of them and work to make this country great again," he said.

Sex Offender Allowed to Enroll at High School, Parents Outraged

Steven Holt, 18, was convicted of sex crimes in another state.

YUCCA VALLEY (KTLA) -- Parents at Yucca Valley High School say they're outraged that a convicted sex offender is enrolled as a student.

Steven Holt, 18, was convicted of sex crimes in Wisconsin.

Authorities in San Bernardino County have not released the details of his crimes, but Holt was reportedly involved in multiple sexual assaults with female victims between the ages of 6 and 15.

Holt was allowed to enroll in the special education program at Yucca Valley High on April 4, according to the Morongo Unified School District.

Holt was on campus last week and also rode a school bus, but he was supervised at all times, school officials said.

The district mailed a letter to the families of all its students on Friday explaining the situation.

The letter contained Holt's name and age, but no picture.

Many parents say they're outraged by the decision to allow a registered sex offender to attend classes.

District officials say they understand parents' concerns, but must they must still uphold Holt's right to an education.

Zsa Zsa Gabor To Become New Mom at 94?

Prince von Anhalt says he will use his sperm, an egg donor and a surrogate mother.

Zsa Zsa Gabor, 94

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband says he and his wife are planning to have a baby with the help of artificial insemination and a surrogate mother.

67-year-old Prince Frederic von Anhalt visited a fertility clinic in Beverly Hills on Wednesday and told CNN, "I've gone through the initial steps of donor matching and blood work and next week the donation process will begin."

Anhalt plans to use his sperm and an egg donor and estimates that the entire process will cost about $100,000.

According to Anhalt, his 94-year-old wife has always dreamed of having a child with him and carry on the Gabor name.

Gabor's two sisters did not leave an heir and her only child -- 64-year-old Francesca Hilton, a product of Gabor's second marriage to hotel magnate Conrad Hilton -- does not use the Gabor name, says Anhalt.

Hilton's full name is Constance Francesca Gabor Hilton.

When Hilton heard the news about the baby, she described herself as shocked and told CNN "That's just weird."

Anhalt banned Hilton from visiting Gabor earlier this year.

Gabor has suffered major health problems this year. In recent months, she had her hip replaced and her leg amputated. She has been unable to walk since a 2002 car accident.

The prince is Gabor's ninth husband. He acquired his royal title when he was adopted as an adult by a German woman.

The Hungarian-born actress is famous for her many marriages and outspoken personality.

She is best known for her roles in John Huston's Toulouse-Lautrec biopic, "Moulin Rouge," in 1953, "The Story of Three Loves" in 1953, and Orson Welles' 1958 cult classic, "Touch of Evil."

Dodgers to Play First Home Game with Enhanced Security

The team announced Wednesday that it's ending a half-price beer promotion.

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- The Dodgers will play their first home game with changes to improve security at the stadium Thursday night.

The new safety measures come two weeks after a Giants fan was brutally beaten after the Dodgers home opener.

The 42-year-old father of two and paramedic remains hospitalized in critical condition in a drug induced coma at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

He suffered a severe skull fracture and bruising to his frontal lobe.

Doctors had to remove a portion of Stow's skull to help reduce severe brain swelling. They say it's possible he sustained lasting brain damage.

In the wake of the attack, Dodgers officials are considering a variety of changes to improve safety.

The team has already announced one big change. Half-price beer will no longer be sold during baseball games as part of a six-game "Throwback" promotion beginning April 21, the Dodgers said Wednesday.

The team will still dress in 1940s uniforms, will continue to include half-price food and soft drinks.

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt also agreed to create a computer mapping and crime tracking system for the stadium similar to the one the LAPD uses to monitor crime patterns and hotspots throughout Los Angeles.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck vowed to double police presence at games.

McCourt has agreed to pay for an increase in the number of LAPD officers patrolling in the stadium and the parking lots during and after games.

"If you come to intimidate, to antagonize either other fans or fans of another team, we're going to do one of two things," Beck said. "You're going to be thrown out of the stadium or you're going to get to go to jail."

"You are going to see a sea of blue. And it's not going to be Dodger blue. It's going to be LAPD blue," Beck said.

Undercover police officers will be on hand as well, according to Beck.

The team has also hired Beck's predecessor, William Bratton, to assess their security policies and procedures at the stadium.

The Dodgers said Bratton and his team at the global investigative firm Kroll will begin consulting immediately.

Bratton said he plans to look at several issues, including lighting in the parking lots, security staffing levels and alcohol sales.

Meantime, hundreds of people participated in a fundraiser at Dodgers Stadium on Monday.

Motorists lined up at the stadium to drop off cash and checks for a relief fund for Stow. Over $61,000 was collected

First U.S. full face transplant done in Boston

BOSTON (Reuters) - A 25-year-old Texas man has received the first full face transplant done in the United States, Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital said on Monday.

More than 30 physicians, nurses, anesthesiologists and residents worked for more than 15 hours to replace the nose, lips, facial skin, muscles of facial animation and nerves of Dallas Wiens, disfigured in an electrical accident in 2008.

"The pioneering achievement accomplished by the entire transplant team is a gift made possible by the most selfless act one human being can do for another, organ donation," said hospital president Betsy Nable. The hospital did not release the name of the donor.

The surgery was performed last week on Wiens, who had virtually all his facial features burned off by contact with a high-voltage wire. It was the second face transplant procedure done at Brigham and Women's, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

Wiens remains in the hospital but has woken up fully, has chatted on the phone with family and is walking, doctors said of his progress.

They expect him to be eating soon with the next major milestone being his return home to Texas. Wiens is expected to regain most of the sensation of his forehead and cheek on the right side, but less so on the left part of the cheek and forehead where damage was more severe, surgeons said.

"He is determined to get well and move on with his life and to make something of his life," said Wiens' grandfather Del Peterson, adding that Wiens intends to become an advocate for facial donations.

The surgical team was not able to restore his vision.

Wiens' appearance post-surgery will not look like the donor, but will also not look like himself, doctors said.

Two additional patients are on the hospital's waiting list for face transplant surgeries, doctors said, including Charla Nash, the Connecticut woman mauled by a chimpanzee in 2009.

The first partial face transplant surgery conducted in the United States was performed at the Cleveland Clinic in December 2008. In that 22-hour procedure, doctors transplanted 80 percent of the face of Connie Culp, who lost most of the midsection of her face to a gunshot in 2004.

The world's first successful partial face transplant was performed in France in 2005, according to government health records. The first full face transplant was done in Spain in 2010.

Another Broadway Spider-Man Cast Member Injured

(FILE)
(FILE)
NEW YORK (KTLA) -- The injury-prone Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" has temporarily lost another cast member after the show's lead actress was hurt performing an onstage battle scene, according to a spokesman.

T.V. Carpio, who plays Arachne, will be out for two weeks, according to Rick Miramontez, a spokesman for the show. Miramontez said Carpio was injured March 16 while performing the scene with another actor. The spokesman did not say specifically how the cast member was injured.

Understudy America Olivo will perform the role during Carpio's absence, Miramontez said.

Carpio's injury follows a series of other accidents and setbacks that have bedeviled the show.

In December, actor Christopher Tierney became the third performer to suffer an injury while wearing the red mask of the Marvel Comics superhero. The accident was serious enough to prompt producers to announce new safety measures.

Earlier this year, an actress suffered a concussion offstage during the first preview night.

The show, which is still in previews, was supposed to open earlier this month. However, the musical's debut was put off for the sixth time after the producers replaced their director. The producers said the delay would give the show's creators time to work on various revisions, including improving the musical arrangements and sound quality.

The $65 million stage version of the Spider-Man story is now scheduled to open in early summer.

Legendary Actress Elizabeth Taylor Dies at 79

Actress Elizabeth Taylor
Taylor had been hospitalized for congestive heart failure.
LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor has died at the age of 79.

Taylor died early Wednesday morning of congestive heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to her publicist, Sally Morrison. She was surrounded by four her children, Morrison said.

Taylor was hospitalized in February for symptoms caused by congestive heart failure, described at the time as an ongoing condition. Her condition had stabilized, and it was hoped she would be able to return home.
Taylor, a double Oscar winner famous for her eight marriages -- twice to actor Richard Burton -- underwent heart surgery in 2009 to replace a leaky valve.

She announced in 2004 that she had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure -- a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to other organs.

Taylor's son, Michael Wilding, released the following statement after Taylor's death:

"My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world.

"Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts."

In addition to her children, Taylor is survived by 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A private family funeral later this week. Details about a public memorial will be released later, Morrison said.

Flowers will be placed on her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday. The star is located at 6336 Hollywood Boulevard.

The London-born Taylor, who won Oscars for her roles in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" in 1966 and "Butterfield 8" in 1960, has been using a wheelchair for more than five years to cope with chronic pain after breaking her back four times.

In 2006, she appeared on Larry King's CNN interview show to deny reports that she was gravely ill or suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Taylor has had three hip-replacement operations, a benign brain tumor, skin cancer and pneumonia. She spent two stints in rehab in the 1980s for alcohol and prescription drug addiction.

Taylor first achieved stardom at the age of 12 in "National Velvet" and became famous for her violet eyes, dark alluring beauty and love of diamonds.

She had not appeared on screen since the 2001 TV movie "Old Broads." Her last Hollywood movie performance was the 1994 live action comedy "The Flintstones."

Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor were cast in a memorable motion picture classic, National Velvet, in 1944, when she was only 12-years old. He was then 24.

Naked woman rescued from cliff

 http://www.ktla.com/videobeta/28672591-1bad-4c65-94e4-09ba5c13ccb9/News/Naked-Woman-Rescued-From-Cliffs

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego lifeguards Tuesday rescued a young woman who apparently became stranded on a cliff above Black's Beach without her clothes.

Dozens of lifeguards and Fire Engine Company 9 were sent to the Glider Port at about 2:15 p.m., according to San Diego Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque. It took them about 30 minutes to rig a series of rescue ropes. A female lifeguard then rappelled down to an exposed ledge, where the 27-year-old woman was stuck.

After hooking up the woman in a rescue harness, the lifeguard helped her rappel to the beach which was 500 feet below, where she was provided with clothing. The entire operation took about an hour, from start to finish.

The young woman was unharmed, Luque said. She will not be charged for the rescue, he added.

"She just became stuck," Luque said. "This happens all the time at Torrey Pines and Mission Trails."

Park rangers cited the woman for disregarding signs and entering a restricted area of Torrey Pines State Park.
Black's Beach has been widely considered a "clothing optional'' recreation spot for decades, though lifeguards began handing out public nudity citations there some 12 years ago. Despite the effort to enforce a standard of modesty there, however, some insist on enjoying the scenic stretch of shoreline au naturel.
